Practices, Regenerative Farming

You may have heard Joe or I refer to our type of farming as regenerative.  Unless you've joined us for a farm tour, you may not quite understand the depth of what that word means.

To regenerate means to restore, revive or produce anew.

For decades, farm land across the country has been row cropped without rest, which experts have learned can strip soil of nutrients and its living microbiology.  Synthetic pesticides and fertilizers were used to keep pest pressure low and growth fast. This essentially leaves the soil dead. Farmers are seeing the effects and starting to do something about it.

Our goal on the farm is to leave the land better than we found it, to bring it to life again, to quite literally regenerate the microbiology and ecosystems beneath AND above the soil.

To do that, we've utilized our chickens, pigs and cows to fertilize the soil naturally and lightly disturb the soil enough to encourage new growth.

How amazing is it that simply letting animals express their natural instincts leads to healing the land - chickens scratch & peck, cattle graze and pigs root.

We've watched our fields transform from dusty patches of weeds to pastures full of diverse, native grasses and legumes.

We still have a long way to go, but seeing the early transformation has been encouraging. We are learning about the roles the weeds play in soil health. For instance, a weed we hated for a long time turned out to be the very thing that would help our overly compact soil to loosen up to allow the natural seed bank to germinate and thrive. We've seen wild berries trail all along our ditches.

We're simply taking small steps daily to allow the ecosystems on our farm to thrive again. It's been amazing to watch it all unfold before us and see the work finally start to pay off little by little.

We are so grateful to Understanding Ag and the Soil Health Academy for everything they’ve equipped our farm with and all the knowledge & experience they share with farmers across the country.

When you purchase meats & eggs from our farm, you're supporting this way of farming. You're saying yes to regeneration and thriving ecosystems, sustainability, growth and health… not just for the land and animals but for YOU who get to enjoy the nourishing products from our family’s farm.

THANK YOU.
