Bacon Pie

Bacon Pie

Joe has never been much of a cook. His specialties include eggs, grilled cheese and frozen pizza.

So you can imagine my surprise when his mom told me that before I knew Joe, he had called her asking for a recipe.

He was having some friends over and wanted to make them one of his childhood favorites….Bacon Pie.

It’s the perfect blend of bacon, swiss cheese & onion in a quiche-like dish that makes it’s own crust.

I’m excited to share the recipe with you with a few tweaks!

Sausage Cheddar balls

Sausage Cheddar balls

I’ve been tweaking my sausage ball recipe for a while now and have made these for parties, appetizer night, girls get-togethers and most recently to freeze for and easy breakfast side once baby girl is here.

The key for me is getting your sausage to room temperature first and using melted butter. It makes the balls come together a lot easier!

Finally, a Ribs Recipe I Enjoy!

Finally, a Ribs Recipe I Enjoy!

I’m sure like me, you’ve had your fair share of frustration with ribs. They’re either not tender enough that you have to work to eat them or the recipe is super complicated.  I have been attempting pork ribs recipes since we started raising our own pork back in 2020 and had yet to find a way to prepare them that I truly enjoyed. That is, until I finally stumbled across this method and made it my own. This recipe is SUPER simple. You just need a crockpot and an oven. Plus, the prep is minimal!

Stretch Your Food Dollars with this Ham, Bean, & Veggie Soup

Stretch Your Food Dollars with this Ham, Bean, & Veggie Soup

Now that we are a couple weeks into fall, I’m getting excited for all the soups and broths. Soups are cozy, easy to make, and usually utilize the more inexpensive cuts like chicken broth bones, pork neck bones, or like in this recipe, ham hocks. The hock is basically the very bottom of the leg bone where the foot attaches to the leg. It’s a lot of skin and fat with a bit of meat so many butchers have these smoked & cured to add flavor and a bit of meat to beans, broths and soups.

Never Eat a Dry Pork Chop Again

Never Eat a Dry Pork Chop Again

You know what I’m talking about….the pork chop you have to slather gravy over or need to chew for minutes before swallowing. I grew up thinking pork chops were tasteless, tough and dry. I honestly wasn’t that excited to try ours when we harvested our first pork, because I was expecting the same thing.

Cooking Through a Half Pig

Cooking Through a Half Pig

I gotta admit, there were a lot of pork cuts I was unfamiliar with or unsure how to prepare. However, we are really finding value in making sure nothing goes to waste and learning how to use the whole animal, organ meat and all. Not only is purchasing pork in bulk cost effective, it’s also reassuring to know that you’ve got a stocked freezer that you can shop out of weekly. Plus, you know how the animal is raised and you have that connection to your farmer & your food.
